Lola Sky: Brief Me, Baby! S1, Ep 3

Quinita followed Lexi into her office.

Just like the rest of the building, everything was see-through. However, Lexi opened the drawer of her desk and reached into and pressed a button. The windows of her office instantly went black.

Lexi threw her long, dark Latina hair over her shoulder with flair.

“Why she gotta be so extra?” Quinita thought to herself. She always felt that Lexi was disingenuous and a brown noser. An ass kisser. She was so lazy about her job but was always quick to tattle on others. She’d tried to get Quinita fired on a few occasions until Quinita decided to return the favor.

“Sweetie, I know you do not like me, pero I want to put our differences aside so that we can work on this major project, okay?” Lexi started in her heavy Puerto Rican accent.

“Rule number one is to stop calling me sweetie. I’m not your child or your friend, I’m your colleague.” Quinita retorted. She just couldn’t stand Lexi!

Lexi smiled so hard, the red lipstick seemed as though it was smeared all over her face. “I will try,” she replied.

Quinita nodded her head in a half-hearted agreement, “So what do you have to show me?”

Lexi retrieved a small, black briefcase from under her desk, “Mami, I couldn’t wait to show you!” she said with excitement as she opened the briefcase to reveal its contents.

Inside the briefcase was a collection of earbuds, clip-on mics, micro-cameras, gloves, a wig, and a ski mask. There was also a mini vest for a small animal.

“I gotta be wired for this? What the hell are y’all sending me up there to really do?” Quinita asked, “I dunno how I feel about this!”

Mira, don’t worry,” Lexi attempted to help calm Quinita, “you’ll be just fine! You’re the only one here who can do this job and do it right. Besides, look at the little vest for your kitty! Aye bendito! So cute!”

Quinita rolled her eyes so hard she thought they broke.

“Anyways, Mami, you will be taking this with you to Atlanta. You and Twelve will go together, of course, but you will put the mics around your neck area, and the cameras on your torso area,” Lexi explained as she presented the pieces to Quinita. She had long, bright red stiletto acrylics.

“Here is your plane tickets, your key to your apartment in Atlanta, and a credit card for anything necessary,” she continued before asking, “…any questions?”

“What’s the wig and the mask for?” Quinita asked

“For just in case..” Lexi said nervously as if she truly didn’t want Quinita to ask that question, “…pero, mira mami, you’ll be fine! I promise,” she said as the red lipstick spread across her face again.

Something just didn’t feel right.

Quinita stared at the equipment on the desk with bewilderment.

There was a knock at the door.

Lexi glanced at the camera on the screen of the computer that sat in the corner behind her.

“It’s Drew,” Lexi said as she got up to open the door. She smelled like all the perfume at the mall.

“So, are we ready to go?” Drew said, glancing at Quinita.

“Drew, with all due respect…” Quinita started, “…what the fuck is this!?”

“Aaaaaahhhh, yes! My darling, I thought you’d never ask!” Drew was such a lovable asshole. He smelled like coffee and a smoke break, “It’s your peeping Tom paraphernalia!”

Quinita waited for him to get serious.

“Q, if you’re successful in this mission, you will not only be responsible for bringing billions of dollars into our university and for our research funding, you’re going to save so many lives! Lives that are waiting to be cured…with cures that the CDC is holding back from the entire country!” Drew explained as he placed his heavy hand on her shoulder, “I know you can do this. I know you can do it, and you will find what we’re looking for.”

Quinita stared at Drew for a few seconds before picking up the contents from the desk.

“This better come with a bonus, Drew, or I quit!” she demanded as she walked past him.

“You’re not a quitter,” he said as she walked away, “Your flight leaves tomorrow afternoon, and Xuan’s waiting outside. Tell the little critter I said hi!”

Quinita stepped into the elevator, “will do,” she said, “Oh! And thanks for the snacks.”

The elevator went down.

Quinita got back into the shiny, black BMW and rode all the way home, smothered in anxiety as she held on to the new briefcase.

“How did it go?” Xuan asked after driving for ten minutes.

Quinita hadn’t said a word since she got back in the vehicle. She was so nervous.

“It…it was okay. I’m not fired.”

“That’s good!” Xuan replied.

The next afternoon, Quinita packed a large suitcase and a kennel that contained the infamous Twelve.

“I gotta admit, Twelve…I’m scared shitless, but we can do it!” she said to him as they exited the apartment.

Twelve pawed at the metal gate, “Mmmmrrrrrooowwww!”

Xuan was downstairs waiting in the BMW.

“Busy week ahead yeah?” he asked.

“Ohhh yeah!” Quinita replied.

Xuan took Quinita and Twelve to the airport.

Quinita packed everything that was important, including her passport and the necklace her grandmother gave to her as a child.

“When you wear this, nothing can hurt you. Grandma ain’t gon let nobody hurt her baby!” Quinita’s grandmother said in her memory. It was a discreet-looking gold necklace that had a small black stone on the pendant. Quinita always felt an added layer of security when she wore it. And boooyyyyy did she need it this time!

“Come through, Grammy, come through!” she thought to herself while sitting in her seat as the plane left the runway. Twelve was at her feet.

They were on their way to Atlanta, with the hopes of saving the world.
